106502. Story: To Honor a Dear Friend, We Celebrated Life at a Funeral
Having a moment of passion in a ladies’ restroom isn’t unusual for Andrea and me. But it is unusual for us to do it during a funeral. And yet today it happened for the very first time, and it was wholly appropriate.
You see, my aunt Moreen died Friday. She passed away peacefully at 89 after what she called a “most beautiful life”. That’s how she described it despite the fact that she had to spend over forty years of her life as a closet lesbian, never revealing that her live-in “friend” Anne was the love of her life. Only in the last decade was she able to come out.
Aunt Moreen and Anne lived long enough to see their love become something they didn’t need to hide. Anne passed away last year. I saw these two frail old ladies finally kiss in public, say “I love you” to each other, and get married. It was a magical moment.
Moreen left instructions to “find a way to celebrate life” at her funeral… so we did exactly that, in our own way.
I’ll miss you, auntie. I’ll miss the jam tarts that you baked for me every time I visited. I’ll miss the glimpses you trustingly gave me into the most precious secret of your life. You helped me become what I am.
For that, and for many other things, I salute you with my quiet tears and my muffled whispers of joy at your funeral. Andrea and I celebrated life for you.
